The latest in the Texas kidnapping case

Yes, I’m talking about the FLDS fiasco in Texas that seems to have stemmed from a hoax phone call. Now it turns out that in their excitement to save children who may or may not have needed saving, CPS agents detained an adult.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — State child welfare officials are conceding that a newborn’s mother, who belongs to a polygamous sect and has been held in foster care as a minor, is an adult.

A Child Protective Services attorney told state District Judge Barbara Walther on Tuesday that the mother of a boy born April 29 is not a minor. She had been held with underage girls since CPS moved more than 400 children from the sect’s ranch to shelters across the state.

I guess that’s a big oopsie, ain’t it? Never mind that CPS got it wrong over and over again, they still plan to keep custody of the young woman’s newborn son.

I know that some will think that I’m weird for calling this CPS fiasco a kidnapping and will be writing to demand that I think of the children. Guess what, I am. That the state can come in and take children based on hysteria over a religious group being outside the mainstream should make every parent cringe. If, in fact, you are a parent who thinks this raid was justified, just wait until you are the parent on the “wrong” public opinion side of a religious, diet, exercise, education, immunization or clothing fad and CPS comes to steal your children. You’ll be certain to understand then that the only persons who should be in charge of thinking of your children are those within your family or friend spheres whom actually care about them.
