Overheard on vacay
I’m on vacay and this morning was having breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel in Carmelo, Uruguay. I happened to overhear a conversation between 3 Americans at a nearby table. There was some laughter at the D’s attempt to rewrite delegates’ rules , the pitiable situation of McCain’s top R spot and then music to my ears. Almost music, anyway.
The three went on to say that they really wished the LP was stronger and that they hope the LP nominates and elects a truly viable candidate. They thought it time for the LP to hit hard. The doc was nearly pinching me under the table saying, “Don’t say ANYTHING!”
Of course, I said something. I apologized for eavesdropping (though they were loud enough- as we Americans are known to be- for the whole dining room to hear), and went on to say something along the line of, “Dammit, the LP is trying!” They thanked me for my lowly level of service within the party and the doc smiled at the idea of these well-heeled people longing for a good 3rd party run.
That conversation, paired with the the beauty I always find in the region, on top of the doc telling me before we left DFW that the LP’s had it right all along, giving me props for having conviction with regard to my principles even while being called kooky by people who thought they knew better, and the beautiful South American sun and air has made this a trip of a lifetime.
I’ll have more on Monday evening but right now, I’m getting truly sloshed on Argentinian wine. I do feel the need, though, to ask TWC if he would like a good Malbec. I owe him a bottle for a favor and he seems reluctant to collect- this is my public offer of payment on a debt.

Great to run across true believers in odd places. I’ve a German client, an immigrant who has been here 30 years or more. We’re talking over taxes and for some reason I say …well, that’s one reason why Ron Paul says…... He cuts me off and in an excited voice he tells me how great he thinks RP is and then he finishes with something to the effect that anyone who watches network news wouldn’t even know RP was running.
PART TWO
Argentina is Malbec heaven and although I don’t actually have a favorite Malbec, I’ve enjoyed many of late.
Argentine winemakers take this forgotten grape seriously and have done for Malbec what Chilean winemakers have done for Carmenera (which is the lost grape of Bordeaux and was what fine red wine was made from in France before Cabernet).
There is no debt, ma’am, but I appreciate your generous offer and would be especially grateful to you if you would bring me back one bottle of YOUR favorite Argentine Malbec. Thankee.
PART THREE
Very cool that you guys are having a great time. Everyone I know who has gone has loved it.
Salud!
Miche,
I’m jealous – I LOVE South America! Hey – be sure to check out Yerba Matte – I love the stuff and shared some w/a guy from Uruguay who places on a Chilean futbal team.
It is awesome!

Elle
I’m seasoning my Mate gourd now! It’s some great stuff.
I’m home and nursing an Ambien hangover. I will post some pics in a little while.
Ok, now you have to tell me how to season a mate gourd – I have 2 and have not used them yet!
Elle,
You have to fill it with the tea and let it sit overnight. Then rinse with water and let water sit overnight. Then, one more time with the tea overnight and it’s ready to go.
Miche,
the first time you put the tea in – do you add water too? Sorry, never done this before. I just brew it like tea and have been too afraid to use my gourds.
Thanks!
The first time, you put in tea leaves/grounds and then add the hot water. Follow the rest of directions.
Did you have the mate demonstration? If not, we are having the district convention at my house on Saturday (noon) and I’m happy to show you how to do it. I’m also happy to give you my info on the process.
How’s the newest little TitatiumBaby forming in the womb? (S)he must be turing out to be a perfect little libertarian and I’m sure that you’re providing Rothbard rather than Mozart through little headphones on the belly!
xoxo,
miche
Thanks for the info – everything is going well – we need to talk!
I was unable to communicate with the mate drinkers that I met, they were willing to share though! Buenos Aires and Uraguay are much more into drinking mate than Chileans are so I really had to go out of my way to look for it, and almost did not come back with a gourd!
