Massages, prostitution, and Dallas PD

Dallas has this stretch of road called Harry Hines Blvd. It is known for its seedy clubs, cheaply manufactured goods, nude modeling venues, street walkers, and massage parlors. In the 14 years that I’ve lived in and around Dallas, attempts to sanitize the area have failed miserably. Prostitution isn’t called the world’s oldest profession without reason. The latest quixotic tilting involves DPD and the massage parlors on Harry Hines.

In a new tactic made possible by a 2005 state law, the city attorney’s office got injunctions against two spas last month for running illegal massage parlors – even though police weren’t able to make any prostitution arrests. In the past, such lawsuits have typically followed prostitution charges.

“Police are working these cases in every way they can,” said Jennifer Richie, assistant city attorney over the code compliance section. “We don’t have to have a prostitution case to accompany the massage lawsuit.”

Since Sept. 1, 2005 – when the new massage law took effect – police have made 81 cases for prostitution, 49 for aggravated promotion of prostitution and 82 for giving a massage without a license, said Lt. Christina Smith, head of the vice unit.

But the cases represent a legal paradox: It’s easier for the city to sue spas for massages than it is to sue for prostitution.

Who the fuck cares if some guy gets an unlicensed massage with a happy ending? I don’t and neither do most of my friends. We live in a city that has escort and massage services advertised plainly in the back pages of one of the best alternative newspapers in the state. A quick glance through Craig’s List will find ads for unlicensed massages. There is a market for sex by the hour and there is nothing that will ever be done in the court system or legislation to change it.

You know what my friends and I care about? We care that robberies and rape crimes are on the rise in Dallas. While DPD chases down vice in massage parlors, people are experiencing very real crime against person and property. When one considers that the police have busted more people on licensing violations than prostitution, even the most ardent Bible believer should want to scrap the vice program in Dallas if only to be a better steward of rescources.

If a guy wants a non-therapeutic massage from a scantily clad woman who wishes to provide the service, let ‘im have it. Vice is and should be a morality issue, not a criminal one and the police should be on the street protecting and serving the people of Dallas.

  1. In one word — “Amen!”

  2. Well said!

  3. No doubt! Sometime ago in Virginia the officers were actually getting hand jobs at parlors they were investigating…go figure!

  4. Hey Michelle,
I didn’t know how to answer your post so I came to your page and was delighted. RON PAUL ALL THE WAY!! I am on that Ron Paul picture page, do you know what I’m talking about, have you seen it??
Anyway, you asked if I thought you taking guitar lessons was a good idea on my post about my Gibson Dove. Well I absolutely think you should. Although it’s nothing like Guitar Hero I’m sure, you will still enjoy it a ton. If you do pursue lessons, let me know how it goes, and if you need any help feel free to ask. Also, great job on tv, how did you get invited to do that? I agree with your blog, very like-minded (my last 3 girlfriends were strippers too), but you’re doing a great job, keep up the good work.
On a side comment to Stiletto on her comment above, that happens everywhere, most cops are corrupt period, but here in Philly, I know of a girl (stripper) who was raped by a cop and they just get away with it. Hopefully things will start to change if we can get Ron into office. My only fear that he won’t is that when I hear how the candidates are pre-picked by the controlling elite, so if that’s true we’re all just a bunch of screwed idiots anyway.
Thanks Michelle, and don’t be a stranger.

  5. FTR, I’m too old to be a stripper now. We just lost a ton of dough in Vegas last weekend and I joked with hubby about dollars and brass poles, but he was having none of it. LOL

Anyway, GO RON PAUL!! He is the only candidate of the R’s and D’s that I’d vote for. I can’t vote for him in the primary as I’m a county officer and couldn’t hold LP convention (it’s illegal to affiliate with two parties) and the LP is very important to me. I’m encouraging every Texas libertarian who cares not about participating as a delegate in our convention process to vote Ron Paul. He is the best shot freedom minded people have. After him, the Libertarian Party.

Peaceful revolutions are better than bloody ones.

  6. Miche, I don’t know anything about the rules in Texas (hell, I know very little about them here in ‘Bamaland so I emailed Steve Gordon about this) but I think it’s essential for Paul supporters to do whatever they need to do to become delegates to the GOP nominating convention. If they have to be Republicans in the Lone Star State then please try to influence Republicans who support Paul to do this.

Oh yeah……sorry about your losses in Vegas, but ya’ puts ya’ money down and takes your chances to lose sometimes and win less frequently. :-)

  7. In TX we don’t register by party so all one has to do is show up at the local school and vote. Like I said, I’m encouraging every TX libertarian to vote RP in the primary if they don’t plan on attending LP convention.

In ‘Bama, you guys can vote RP and participate in the LP convention. You have an open primary.

  8. I must not have myself clear. What I was getting at is that since Paul is seeking the Republican nomination he needs to have supporters qualify to run to become delegates to the GOP nominating convention. So far in Alabama no one has filed with the Republican party to become a delegate committed to Paul and 17 have filed to become Thompson delegates. Here anyone can run to be a delegate but they have to pay a filing fee to the party and complete a form saying that you are a Republican although we don’t register as members of any party. To see what is required here you can go to http://algop.org/ and look for “2008 Delegate Qualifying Information,” on the right side and then click on the FAQ link below that.
