Idiocracy
Some movies entertain you and some make you look at your world. Idiocracy does both and it is one of my newest favorite movies. I found it quite by accident at Blockbuster the other day and watched it again last night. Mike Judge has hilariously demonstrated what could happen if people don’t start getting it together.
The story starts by poking a little fun at people who take having children too seriously to actually have any and moves to the other end of the spectrum to have a laugh at those who don’t take reproducing seriously at all.
Joe Bowers is an average American soldier who is selected to participate in a top secret hibernation experiment. The director of the experiment runs into trouble with the law and Joe’s pod is forgotten. He wakes up 500 years later to see that our country is in peril. The crops aren’t growing, healthcare is non-existent, the legal system is in shambles, the economy is ruined, and our president is a joke. Ok, our current president is a joke so that part may not be too much of a stretch for some. Actually, our justice system is having some problems too, so again, not much of a stretch.
Joe is given an IQ test after a conviction and is shocked to learn that he is the smartest guy in the world. He is brought in by the president, who in the “House of Representin,” tells the country that Joe will fix- in one week’s time- all of the country’s problems.
The crop problem doesn’t seem difficult to Joe. He wants to change the irrigation process; he wants to water the crops with actual water instead of the nation’s top sports drink. It is such a basic scientific principle, but years of slogans have convinced the rest of the cabinet that plants crave electrolytes.
This movie is one of the funniest scary movies that I’ve ever seen. Buy a copy, watch it, and then look around. You’ll see that Mike Judge’s comedy is not too far fetched.
