‘Cocaine’ seized in CT

cocaine-drink1.jpgThere was a big Cocaine bust in CT, but it was not the illegal white powder seized; it was cases of the energy drink. From Fox News:

HARTFORD, Conn. — Hundreds of cases of an energy drink called Cocaine have been seized by the state, which accuses the Las Vegas company that produces it of not licensing it as required by law.

It’s the latest in a battle that began last week when state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez denounced the drink because of its name. The drink contains no drugs and is marketed as an energy drink, the manufacturer says.

Jerry Farrell Jr., commissioner of the Department of Consumer Protection, said Monday that the state has embargoed 300 cases of the drinks from distribution warehouses in Connecticut. The bottles do not provide coding indicating the source of the drink, he said.

State law requires licensing to allow state officials to know whether water used in the production is suitable for drinking, Farrell said.

“We have no information whatsoever on the drink or its potable water,” he said. “If there is a problem, we want to get back to the source of the potable water.”

They seized the drink because they are unsure of its water quality? Yeah sure, and I am next month’s Playboy centerfold.

I am not an energy drink kind of girl, but I did taste Cocaine’s product down in New Orleans last month. My son-in-law told me about it and when a friend of my daughter walked in with a can, I figured that I may as well see what the buzz was about. It is not like there is really cocaine in there. It wasn’t bad, but it certainly isn’t the type of thing I would seek out. I remember saying then that this would be picked on like Chronic Candy’s pot flavored lollipops.

This idea of yanking a product because of its potential message stinks; there are no drugs in the products and they are not marketed to children. If your child is too young to know the difference between packaging and real drugs, then he is too young to go to the store with his own money. If he is shopping on his own and thinks that these products are a natural springboard to drug addiction, then you have failed at your job of parenting.

People who want to control the actions of everyone have banned trans fat, foie gras, smoking, and are now working on suckers and energy drinks. Pretty soon, we will be unable to decide to breathe natural air. But hey, if it protects one person from drugs, obesity, or second hand smoke, it’s gotta be right. Right?

Um, no.
